2005.02.08 Brian McKnight Gemini

Just how "black'" am I? (no racism here)

Aside from the swagger that I kinda notice in my mumbling speech sometimes (do I?), I listen to a lot of r&b music, which makes you kinda dark over time. Anyways, since Brian McKinght, one of the most amazing artists I've listened to, is missing from the list below, I thought it might be good for me to put up his last album to showcase his stunning vocals.

Brian McKnight has eight albums to date, if I remember correctly. One of the most popular contemporary r&b artists, he doesn't seem to get the attention he deserves in the States. I find a lot of the real great r&b singer/song writers such as Brian McKnight, Babyface, Maxwell are not really getting a lot of media attention, which kinda sux as they're the real geniuses behind the scene for more popular singers. That situation is totally reversed in Asia where it's all the hype right now with singer/song writers eg. Hirai Ken, Jay Chow etc.

With classics such as "One Last Cry","Anytime", "6 8 12" and "Back at One" under his name, Brian McKnight truely stands as one of the greatest r&b/black artists of all time. Many of his songs are fairly blue and melancholy. Coupled with his penetrating vocals, his songs have captured the souls of many. Besides his vocals, I really like how he uses a lot of guitar and piano in his music, which makes 'em standout among all the pop-ish sounds around.

Anyways, back to the album. I guess I've pulled the wrong album to put up... I think it's "U-Turn" that I wanted to put up... anyways, let me see which tracks I can recommend (listening right now~). omg! I think the first track, "Stay With Him", an intro to the album, is awesome! Totally acapella! Recommended tracks: 03,05,08,12,13.

R&B

With the ever growing popularity of r&b music, I think it's useful to clarify what r&b is.

So what is r&b?

Well, at least for me, r&b has several important elements. They're soul, groove, rhythm and vibe. Soul is the emotional portion, the essence of r&b music. Without the emotions or the soul, r&b is empty as it can hardly strike a chord within the heart and move its listener. Also, without soul, it's hard to stimulate the blues component of the term.

Once the emotional element is settled, the rest belongs to rhythm, the groove and the vibe. Rhythm, as everyone knows, is the tune or melody. There are several categories for the kind of music style in the genre, namely slow jam/groove, funk, gospel, mid-tempo, acoustic and upbeat. I might be missing something there but that pretty much covers typical r&b music. Currently, there are a lot of experiments that cross over into hip-hop, jazz, rap, pop, two-step/garage etc that try to incorporate some flavour of r&b in the music.

With rhythm covered, we move on to groove and vibe. There is actually a slight difference (at least for me). Groove is usually slow-tempo and usually doesn't conjure up too much happy feelings. It's often used in slow jams to evoke a kind of delirious, sexy feeling from its listeners, often leaving them mired in the music and the lyrics, taking them into the situation formed from their imagination. On the other hand, vibe is usually the funk part, which often makes the listeners move their bodies to the beat in a happy, delighted state. Usually one can successfully identify vibe if the music outshadows the lyrics and the music can get listeners counting to the beats.

Anyways, the above is at least my take of what r&b is. I am no musician and I base all my description through avid listening over the years. The following is a compilation I made for my cousin in TW who craves for good English music. I thought it'd be pretty cool if I can throw together something from my years of listening to r&b music. So take a listen to the following list, nearly all the different r&b styles are covered. R&B is a major part of my music world:D

Hins唱過一堆好歌如"My Way"﹑"期待"﹑"孤單公園"﹑"Hurt So Bad" 等等。 。。XD)

My Nation

Okay, I am feelin' super generous today~ probably b/c I finally got my History presentation over with and I have some sort of clue on how to begin my paper~

This is my own rip, Amuro Namie's 181920 or her best album. Originally released back in '98, it was re-released in 2004, probably due to popular demand. For anyone familiar with J-pop, Amuro Namie was the big name back then. The pop diva entered the music scene when? like when she's 15 or something? Then she just released a whole bunch of awesome dance tracks, something still not all that popular in the early 90s. So this is it, a collection of her best songs; by any standard, still some of the best J-pop you'll find around today.

After getting married and having a child at the age of 20, which was pretty stunning, Namie Amuro kinda faded out of the pop scene to other rising stars such as Hamasaki Ayumi, Kuraki Mai and Utada Hikaru. However, she seems to be pulling herself back to the forefront of the music scene through the release of her last 2 albums, which are more geared to the recent popularity of hip-hop. Besides dance, I think hip-hop fits her image real well. She's as sexy as ever with her new style XD

Anyways, some recommended favourite tracks from this album are track 01 "Body Feels Exit", track 02 "Try Me~私を信じて~", track 03 "Chase The Chance", track 05 "You' re My Sunshine" and track 10 "A Walk In The Park." Track 12 "Can You Celebrate" is apparently a really big song but I don't really find anything special with it. Probably cuz my Japanese sux so I can't really appreciate the lyrics. LOL:D

1996 The Tony Rich Project Words

Like Uncle Sam below, this is another pioneer of r&b music, Tony Rich Project. I don't know why the guy has such a funky name but it has my name in it, so that's all good.:D

Perhaps the biggest song or the only hit song from Tony Rich Project is "Nobody Knows." Like Uncle Sam's hit song, track 02 "Nobody Knows" went down as a classic r&b love song. However, this is also another tragic love song, so I won't recommend it to anyone feelin' melancholy. Nonetheless, the song still ranks as one of my favourite r&b songs and is still well played. Many people mistaken the singer of this song to be Babyface, so it's a good time to clarify right now. Tony Rich actually produced this record under LaFace, so Babyface is the man in the background while Tony Rich is in the fore.

Another release that's super hard to track down in record shops (yeah, I am feelin' lucky lately) but Tony Rich hasn't stopped releasing records. His last album was just this year, 2006, "Pictures." Anyways, another good starting place for anyone not in touch with English r&b.

1997 Uncle Sam

Yay! I finally got this album! in a super excited mood right now~ (beaming)

Since I am not good in hiding my excitement, I feel that I have to put this album up. Well, you wonder who Uncle Sam is. No, this is not the traditional American folk with the pin striped top hat and a finger point at your nose. This is the other Uncle Sam. For that sake, he's not caucasian either.

I reckon not many of you out there have even heard of this guy and yeah, he's not all that popular in the first place. To date, he only has one album release and only one chart topping single, "I Don't Ever Want to See You Again." I guess some of you remember this song in your faint memory somewhere. Anyways, Uncle Sam's album was released all the way back in '97 and "I Don't Ever Want See You Again" was the only song that made it big. He's somewhat of an one hit wonder.

How old was I in '97?......like 13? WTH am I listening to such an adult oriented, tragic love song? I don't know~ no ideas (shrug) I saw the mv too! Reminds me of Leehom's "Forever Love" MV with the piano, the wedding scene and everything. But it's also around that time I began falling in love with r&b. With influences like this guy here, Uncle Sam, it's hard not to. I remember at that time r&b was just on the rise with stars such as Brandy, Monica, R.Kelly, Tony Rich Project, Brian McKinght etc. It was also then that David Tao, Leehom and Shunza were just making it to the music scene in TW.

Lot's of memories right? yeah, those were the good old days~ r&b is cheap nowadays as many singers claim themselves to excel in this music style but in fact, they're not all that good~ r&b is becoming a pop culture, which is not all that healthy, as I think the "soul" portion of what makes good r&b'll be lost completely~ anyways, take a good listen at this album from one of the pioneers of this music style. My favourite tracks are track 9 "Baby You Are" and the hit track "I Don't Ever Want to See You Again." The hit single was also remade into 2 other known versions (at least the medley part). You'll be surprised what they are=)

(Hirai Ken) Un-balanced

okay, I think I've been putting up too many Chinese albums for the last little while and neglecting all the other stuff~ there are others out there who crave for J-pop and yes, indeed, J-pop makes up a lot of the listening I do daily~ therefore, I thought I might share something from my collections (yes, I am in the sharing mood somehow)

This is Hirai Ken's debut album "Unbalanced", which was released all the way back in 1995. The first time I came across Hirai Ken was back in 2000 with his hit release "The Changing Same", which is still one of my favourite Japanese albums, if not my favourite of 'em all. Release of "The Changing Same" was the the turning point for Hirai Ken, as he was little known before the album. After hit singles from the album such as "Why", "Lakuen" and "Love Love Love", the record enjoyed massive sales. Anyways, I shouldn't go too detailed into his hit album; I'll save that when I put the album up.

After I became enchanted by Hirai Ken's amazing vocals, I went about picking up everything I could of him. I picked up this album back in high school and this album sure gives a different side of Hirai Ken with a different music style. Compared to his renowned r&b, this album has more of the late 80s early 90s jazzy and ballad feel to it. I guess this album follows more of the Southern All Stars line; indeed, Hirai Ken actually writes Southern All Stars into the lyrics of one of his songs on the album. However, I guess only the All Stars could do the trick with jazz as Hirai Ken didn't get noticed with this album. When r&b started taking off back in 98-2000 or so, Hirai Ken rose to instant stardom with his breakout release afore mentioned.

This is still a pretty good album with some good songs though. My personal favourites are track 4 "e-gao" and track 3 "precious junk". Most of the songs on this album are light and happy tunes. In this album, one can hear an un-polished Hirai Ken. Yet one can still hear Hirai Ken's really clear, bright and distinguished vocals, which makes him one of the best male vocals around. Well, without further ado, plunge in and take a listen.

PS: anyone want me to do a Hirai Ken special?
